Maple
Welcome to Maple Class! We are Year 1 and Year 2.
Mrs O’Connell teaches the class from Monday to Thursday, Mrs Holding teaches on Thursday afternoon and Miss White teaches all day on a Friday. Mrs Manns is our main class Support Assistant throughout the week and we are very lucky to have a team who expertly support the individual learning needs of pupils across the class.
We are a hardworking class with high expectations in a caring and nurturing environment. We always try to do our best and this is always rewarded with lots of fun while we are learning too! We believe in cross-curricular topics and aim to make learning purposeful and always encourage curiosity.
Our topic based curriculum covers a full range of subjects including English, Phonics, Spelling, Maths, Science, Geography, History, R.E, P.E, Music, Computing, Art, Design and Technology and Personal, Social and Health Education.
Reading is REALLY important in Maple Class. We have daily phonics (Y1) sessions, following the Little Wandle systematic synthetic phonics programme. We also read in small groups 3 times a week, developing our fluency, prosody and comprehension. Each week we visit the school library and choose a new 'reading for pleasure' book. The librarians help us vary our reading diet.
We are starting the Spring term with a new driver for our curriculum which will be history and the topic of ‘The Great Fire of London’. Our Golden thread will be ‘Settlements’ and the children will be working towards answering the question: How do we know the Great Fire of London happened?
We will be looking at a range of sources to be able to answer our question.
