Dear parents of children in Year 6

The Exmoor Challenge is nearly upon us, and the children have (nearly!) finished all their training walks. On Thursday at Killerton they will have a go at self-navigating a route using directions and a map, and over the next week will work with Miss Atkinson to plot the route they will walk on the day (Saturday 2nd May). A reminder that all information can be found here: Exe Valley Federation - Y6 Walk- Killerton and Exmoor Rotary Club

Important information:

  • The children have been split into 2 teams, and their start times can be found below.

CF 1 9:13: Maicy, Freya, Bee, Allettia
CF 2 9:31: Jack, Sammy, Erin, Honour
  • All children should arrive AT LEAST 30 minutes prior to their start time so we can talk to the teams and check equipment prior to setting off.

  • I will meet all children in the car park just inside the school grounds and take the whole team through together as parents are permitted past a certain point.

  • While I will be there all day, it is important that a parent or assigned adult is within close proximity to the route throughout the day. If teams pull out for any reason I will contact parents and children will need collecting from the school. Please make us aware if this contact is NOT the child's parent.

  • School will provide the majority of the equipment needed, however individuals should supply the highlighted items below:

Each team must have and carry:

1. Rucksack

2. Map OL9 (1:25 000 scale, waterproof or in a waterproof case)

3. Compass

4. Torch

5. Emergency survival bag (not space blanket)

6. Basic First Aid kit, including sun block.

7. Whistle (for use in emergencies)

8. Watch or clock (e.g. mobile phone)

9. Money for emergencies, etc.

10. Carrier Bag to carry to dispose tissues/ pick up Litter.

Children can take mobile phones, but these should not be relied on, as signal strengths are inadequate over much of the route.  You should not use the Sat. Nav. / GPS facility even if available as it can easily confuse - it has happened).

Each individual must also have:

1. Own food and drink (water can be topped up at Checkpoints)
2. Stout suitable footwear (not Wellington boots)
3. Warm pullover and trousers (avoid jeans)
4. Hat and gloves/Sun Hat
5. Emergency rations (chocolate/drink etc.)
6. Waterproofs
7. Paper and pencil
8. Hand Sanitiser

We are really proud of all the children for giving this a go. 16 miles is no mean feat!

Best wishes,

Claire Theedom
